YOU HAVE A VERY SOFT VOICE SUSAN A Shocking True Story Of Internet Stalking Susan Fensten Brian Whitney 9781948239981 Books Reviews

  • The headline says it all. Ms. Fensten has reconstructed a real-life stalking crime in all it's darkness. Filled with twists and turns, it's also an exploration of the psyche, not only of the stalker, but the characters involved as well. And, of herself, in some ways. Reflecting back to her youth, then forward into the stalking that took place over an extended period of time, Ms. Fensten has created a real page-turner that any reader of true crime will want to read. The story itself is unique, and needs to be read to be believed. Buy this book now, and start reading immediately!
  • This story was one tangled web of deceit perpetrated on the writer who had innocently went on line to discover more about her father’s family tree.Once she stepped in she was enmeshed in layer upon layer of psychological trauma. Her life became nightmarish with no clear way out.
I’m glad she made it to tell the tale it was one hell of a ride. Netflix should buy the rights.
  • I'll admit that I am a sucker for a good book cover and this one nails it, that's if you like creepy covers of course, and I do!

This story is absolutely bonkers. And it's true which is why it is all the more frightening.

Imagine it's the early 2000's when internet, email, and social media are really beginning to take hold. You post an innocent inquiry on Genealogy.com searching for long lost relatives and to your utter amazement when two weeks later you're contacted by someone claiming to be your cousin. Now imagine that these "long lost family members" turn your life into a living hell for the next two years. Profane & pornographic emails, threats of death and cannibalism, rape, torture. It goes on and on and on and on. You are no longer safe even at work. Your boyfriend is now being harassed via phone calls threatening his death. You are spiraling down the rabbit hole of despair and can not find any police officer or FBI agent to take you seriously.

"Dear cousin, my cousin, Oh cousin so sweet. I've seen where you live, I know what you eat. I want to see your eyes when we first meet."

He was getting closer, I could feel it. He was emerging from my email inbox, coming into the real world. My world.

Finally with the push of her boyfriend demanding some action FBI agent Waller finally steps in to see what he can find out and you will be shocked as to what he discovers.

This is what happened to Susan Fensten. As you read this you will have your mouth agape and you will want to close all social media accounts. (Except Goodreads!)

If I learned anything from this it's to keep your personal information just that - PERSONAL. *Shivers*

Thank you to NetGalley and WildBlue Press for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
  • Thank you Wild Blue Press and Susan Fensten for sharing your story. It's a great teaching tool too.

I don't know what to rate this book, it's really good and I feel for Susan. I want to rate it a 3 due to the content but also rate it a 5 due to Susan. I have to say it's disturbing and the fear you had to go through. This book was picked up, read, put down etc.

To say this book is strange is an understatement. Innocently enough Susan Fensten decided to use a website to try and locate family on her father's side. She ended up locating something very evil. She gets a reply from a Karen, then Leonard, then Sharon, then another and another. They all email each other and get to know one another. Each family sharing way too much. Then things get worse and yes worse. Soon no one in Susan's life is immune, Reading this book made my jaw drop and made me rethink my social media. Susan was smart for taking such good notes and saving everything. I wanted to know who was behind all this, Thank you for sharing your story Susan. It must of been horrible to relive this to put it all down on paper.
    Thanks again Wild Blue Press.

This book is already available. Be careful out there.
  • This was an amazing and spellbounding book that I could not put down and is a true example of reality being stranger than fiction. It is frightening how easy it would be to be pulled into cyberstalking. The author was trying to trace her family roots and got caught in the web of a psychopath. I would love to read an interview by the author. The whole time I was reading I was constantly on the internet trying to verify facts and get more information. The suspense was unbearable at times and I wanted quicker answers than I could read. (And I am a quick reader who can finish a book in a couple of hours but that was not quick enough for me). When I find myself on the internet researching a book that is a true sign of a well written book. Don’t pass this one up it is a winner.
  • First of all, what happened with you, Susan, was simply shocking. I can't imagine how difficult it was be to put your story into a novel, making yourself go through all of the events one more time. Thanks for sharing your story, it was really eye-opening.
    ---
I've heard about the novel on a podcast "True Murder", so I already knew what I'm reading and what will be the twist, but it was still maddening. The only thing I didn't like that much is the sometimes dry narration of events. I didn't know a thing about the writer, what kind of person is she or how this event gradually changed her. There was a few hints but the overall writing somehow was too "matter-of-fact".
But if you want to read a real story about how a seemingly innocent contact on the internet can turn into something really twisted that changes one's life, I highly recommend this novel.

Always be careful with messages from strangers, a healthy skepticism is recommended.
  • This story is one of the most wild and bizarre I’ve ever read. The family that terrorized Susan seems to be straight out of a horror movie, like “The Hills Have Eyes” or something like that. But it was all true and just so unbelievably strange.

It’s hard to say too much more without spoiling anything. The story is well told and modernly relevant since it involves Internet stalking (just to start....)

This is a true crime story with incredible twists, and I highly recommend it
