"read this book while writing my supplements for Yale. the personal statements could be useful if you didn't start yours yet and wanted to read some examples, but as of 2018, most of the supplements are pretty outdated, with the exception of the "why yale" question. also, there really isn't any proof that these were real students that got into yale. all we have is the author's word and although I don't want to discredit someone I don't know, I also think it's important to maintain a degree of skepticism towards the book because unlike some other college essay books i have no idea what the author's credentials are"

  • I’ve been looking for a book like this since 10 years ago when my older kid was in middle school thinking about colleges. Over the years, I’ve read over 20 college application and essay books but really wanted to see the real profiles from accepted students. However, whenever I asked parents whose kids were admitted into Yale or other top colleges, often, I was told that they did not do much, parents did not know what the kids did, or it was too private to share. Some generous parents did tell me some achievements by the students, but I never had the opportunity to see the whole picture connecting school and summer activities, awards, essays and other parts of the application such as high school courses and short questions and answers. Therefore, I always wondered exactly what the students I knew did to be accepted into those top colleges.

The resume and high school courses are not available in any other book I’ve read or tried to find. By reading this book, I felt that I knew most students through their personal stories linked with their activities and years of hard work. I could figure out what each family had done over the years and how long the students have spent on some activities, since the resumes include activities before high school.

I am happy that my younger one has the opportunity to be inspired by students in this book. The awards and summer activities give me great idea on summer plan and profile enhancement too. With what I know now, I would have benefited from reading this book when my kids were in elementary school. Definitely a must-have for families with 6th graders and up if you ever think about a top college, a state university’s honors programs, or scholarships in any colleges.

I often purchase books as holiday and birthday gifts and now this book is on my top list for parents with grade school students.
  • I bought this book for my niece who is a rising high school senior this fall and getting ready to apply for college. This is surely an enjoyable read for anyone ever wonders what the application packages from the students who get into the nation's top colleges look like - are they all academic geniuses, child prodigies, or widely sought after top-notch athletes? After finishing reading this book, while there is some truth to my assumption, I feel mostly this is a book by some “real” high school students with whom I can actually relate to. Sure, they were all outstanding students, and did some amazing things outside classroom during their high school years, but honestly none of these achievements appear to be unattainable for anyone with good and strong work ethics, character and passion. I found it to be especially helpful with the essays put together “as is” in their raw format - these were the actual essays the college admission officers read and the decisions were based upon. What sets this book apart from other books of similar topic is the fact that it contains 15 complete sets of essays required for Yale admission – the Common Application essay, the Yale supplementary essay, the Why Yale essay, and the additional short questions. Furthermore, the College Preparation Timeline from beginning of middle school to the end of high school, the Why Yale story by the editors, and the 15 student profiles provide excellent additions to this already valuable resource. In my opinion, it ought to be on the desktop of every high school student with aspiration of getting into his/her dream college!

  • I wholeheartly recommend "The Road to Yale" for every student applying to college and to Yale in particular. This is the only book that provides very detailed descriptions of a student's extracurricular activities in the context of their application as a whole. Now, as the parent of a college student at a highly selective university, I have heard many stories of students with stellar grades and test scores being disappointed about not getting into their dream school; I have also heard students who have crafted their application to be so coherent and strong that they gain admission. When my child was applying to college, we had to look at a bunch of different books to figure out how to piece together academics, essays, and extracurricular activities into a strong application. We read "50 Harvard Essays," "Fiske guide to college essays..." etc. but still needed to adapt our answers to Yale. Having "The Road to Yale" would have made our process so much easier, because you can see the complete application, including supplements, for each student in the book.

Specifically, for Yale, as for other Ivy-Leagues, I have noticed that each school seems to prefer certain qualities (sometimes different qualities) in their students. If you are wondering what Yale admission officers prefer, reading this book should give you a good idea of common characteristics in the accepted students at Yale.

Since reading this book. I've recommended it to each one of my friends with children applying to college and they have told me it is very useful. Going to Yale may not be everyone's dream, but reading "The Road to Yale" will help your child get to his or her dream school.
  • My daughter is interested in applying Yale. She is a junior now. This book is helpful for her and me (parent).
